In the last two decades the demand on oil has increased since the manufacturing of transportation has increased, specifically for automobiles. This industrial period in society will impact not only the United States but the globe as well. There is a theory called Peak oil, in which their will come a time where oil will no longer be available more abundantly and it will cost more. From there on oil will be dramatically expensive and rare. As the transportation increases the oil dependency also increases. This will evidently lead to a massive change in our ecosystem and infrastructure if people do not learn about how oil is becoming less abundant. When transportation increases so will the need for the scarce fossil fuels.
The idea of Peak Oil has been rising ever since the reservoir has been declining. Once that reservoir reaches a low amount the oil will begin to have more value. Therefore, people will no longer have access to oil and machinery that requires it depends on it, such as shipments for food. People will not only “pay $100 per barrel, but also for gas” (Newman, 2009). Consequently, people will not have any form of mobile machinery in order to transport whatever goods and services there are. There is also a “strong negative correlation between how much fuel a city uses and how much transit it has” (Newman, 2009), meaning that the more buses, for instance, it has there is more oil needed. Basically, if there are more people who have their own vehicles and each needs fuel to run then there is a more high demand there. Take New York City for example, their population is a large amount compared to other major cities in the U.S. If there are more taxis that take people to and from their location then there is a higher rate of fuel usage. Thus, more fuel is used based on how much transportation is available. When oil will begin to decrease at a steady rate it can possibly lead to a collapse and people will no longer live their lives like before, because of the major dependency on
oil.
Countries like the U.S have begun to use hybrid or electric vehicles since the 1990’s. The present generation has thought that eco-friendly vehicles have only been introduced very recently, as recently as 2008. A vehicle called EVI was originally manufactured by Honda and was released in 1996. These kinds of automobiles were discontinued in 1999 for ‘unknown’ reasons. The U.S is one the largest consumers of fuel in the entire globe and other countries like to rely on cheaper resources. “Today oil accounts for 42% of the world’s energy related CO2 emissions, more than coal” (Sandalow, 2007). Before it used to be coal in which people had more usage. Now it is oil, and those fossil fuels are quickly running out. Society needs to understand that oil will not be there forever. It will run out and people will have to choose more alternative sources of transportation and having renewable energy. “Plug-in hybrid engines, biofules, and other technologies can help end the U.S’s oil dependence in a generation” (David, 2007). There are more ecological resources out there; it’s just a matter of choosing it. Yet, they are more expensive and therefore it is much harder to use those than oil.
The area where oil is retrieved from is mostly in the Middle East. This location is best known for its abundant resource of oil in the entire world. Numerous countries have made treaties or agreements to have access to that specific resource but that overlaps another concept. In this certain idea oil is being used on a massive scale by many countries, number one being the U.S. In order for most countries to receive a large amount of oil around the globe there has to be a large amount of oil to last. The “geographic and strategic heart is the Persian Gulf Basin, the home of approximate
of the earth’s known petroleum reserves” (Klare,2004). This specific are where most of the world petroleum is coming from is now coming from the reserves meaning its limit is coming extremely soon. Also, it is across the world and it will also take work to transport it to its destination. Moreover “this area contains the world’s five leading producers of oil” (Klare Michael, 2004). In other words, all of the oil that is being used comes from this one location, and once that is gone there will not be any use for machinery that requires oil. Those supplies will not last and therefore no use for transformational services that need the fuel.
Oil companies make profit because of the transportation demand. The more fuel vehicles use the more money oil companies make to sell the oil. If there is no demand for fuel then the companies have no purpose and therefore no profit. The removal of the trains in the California State were purposely removed (Jessie, 2006). The industries try to not have any other sources so the consumers will want to purchase oil and depend on it. The oil companies will try to detain any other alternative of energy consumption in order for them to keep pumping oil and making profit. They try to set up a system in which people will have to buy fuel and not have access to other choice like hybrids or electric cars. In order for consumers to board buses the oil companies provided them and discontinued trains (Jessie, 2006). The oil companies went to a point where they completely wiped a whole industry of trains in order for people to have buses. Since buses have to be stuck in traffic and consume more fuel, unlike trains that have their own pathway, are faster and do not get stuck in traffic. The system that was set up was to have people use fuel and so the oil demand will continue to increase. This still continues presently and people are unaware of this action since this occurred in the 1980’s. The system is only profiting those who provide the oil and those are the owners of them.
On a daily basis people use fuels and gas to drive to and from a variety of locations. Majority of society drives to work or drops the children to school and repeats this in the afternoon. People do not usually think about the fuel they consume even in an average day. Now, that’s just one person but
theirs other people too, such as the extended family, neighbors colleagues etc. “Every day, tankers carry approximately 14 million barrels of petroleum” (Jessie, 2006). This massive amount is just for a single day within a 7 day week. Now that keeps adding up each month, each year and each decade. Then there’s also the number of people who actually use fuel and oil. For instance, there is approximately 3 million people just in New York City and that is also just one city. Now that’s just the number of people per state and per nation that keep summing up the entire total consumption of oil around the globe. Its hard to imagine that huge number but thinking about how much fuel that is for each and every usage is an enormous amount.
Being dependent on oil will lead to a collapse of the infrastructure and the system of the transportation services as well. Again, the peak oil concept will be introduced soon and that will determine whether or not people will try using other renewable energy or still maintain on suing oil. Once that oil limit is reached machinery will no longer work and society has no idea of how that can
affect the globe. For instance, if other countries were to live and consume oil exactly like the Unite States there will no not be any more oil for anyone at all. Countries like Japan or China have a massive population and majority of them use other transportation services like bicycle or simply walking. The
reason why they can’t purchase vehicles is because majority cannot afford it. Another conflict is that our basic needs require the use of oil in order for them to come to us like food. There are shipments that come to the Unites States and deliver foods to different locations. Even within our community of Little Village people rely heavily on transportation. For example, buses are needed around the neighborhood in order for people to get around, since some do not have owned vehicles here. Overall, if their is no oil there will not be any usage for things such as transportation and that will seriously affect our live and have a drastic change if people are not aware and act upon the system that was set up by the influential group, which are oil companies.
