The Impacts of Globalization on Oil
A new concept has arisen in the last 20 years of humanity. Ever since the development of new technological advances society has created more forms of communication through marketing such as webcam amongst others. Such forms help people be able to contact from long distances for example calling someone from the United States to China. However, not every interaction has its benefits but more disadvantages. This concept is globalization concept where the worldwide market establishes communication and goods. By having the ability to interact with another person from a distance it also requires the economic means. This then requires currency in order to keep the structure from collapsing. Therefore, it also requires the means of transportation to have the product shipped in, consequently, requiring the use of oil. Globalization impacts the demand in oil because goods are brought in through means of transportation and currency is spent, which then cause the supply of oil to decrease. Ultimately, leading to a collapse in society because of the lack of the basic needs.
One of the fundamental causes of utilizing oil is the economic means. In other words, money is used to have oil which then causes money to be an issue. By having people want money because of greed some contradict their own beliefs. An example of the manipulation of the oil companies is with astrophysicist Dr. Willie Soon. He is known for stating that“global warming and the melting of the
arctic sea ice are caused by solar variation rather than human-caused CO2 emissions” (Vidal John, 2011). He feels strongly about this because he is a man of science and therefore is aware of what he is stating, yet he forgets to mention that oil companies have been funding him with great amounts of money and grants. According to The Guardian “documents provided by the Greenpeace… show that The Charles G Koch Foundation, a leading provider of funds for climate skeptic groups, gave Soon two grants totaling $175,000 in 2005/6 and again in 2010” (Vidal John, 2011). On top of that he received “multiple grants from the American Petroleum Institute totaling $274,000” (Vidal John, 2011) amongst other grants. As one can see people are always after the money being produced by a rare natural resource. They just want to get a massive amount of a profit and become ambiguous and greedy individuals. People then are after gaining money above their own beliefs. Ultimately, one will always place value over scarce resources. Moreover, they will create a huge collapse with the function of machinery that requires oil. This then demonstrates that people are easily manipulated by their greed for money, which will put events at stake.
Countries like the U.S have begun to use hybrid or electric vehicles since the 1990’s. The present generation has thought that eco-friendly vehicles have only been introduced very recently, as recently as 2008. A vehicle called EVI was originally manufactured by Honda and was released in 1996. These kinds of automobiles were discontinued in 1999 for ‘unknown’ reasons. The U.S is one the largest consumers of fuel in the entire globe and other countries like to rely on cheaper resources. “Today oil accounts for 42% of the world’s energy related CO2 emissions, more than coal” (Sandalow, 2007). Before it used to be coal in which people had more usage. Now it is oil, and those fossil fuels are quickly running out. Society needs to understand that oil will not be there forever. It will run out and people will have to choose more alternative sources of transportation and having renewable energy. “Plug-in hybrid engines, biofules, and other technologies can help end the U.S’s oil dependence in a generation” (David, 2007). There are more ecological resources out there; it’s just a matter of choosing it. Yet, they are more expensive and therefore it is much harder to use those than oil. People at first began to use electric cars but because of the Oil Companies trying to detain the alternative resources and forcing people to use oil. Again, we see that the economic greed from Globalization affects every aspect of the dependency oil.
Oil, unfortunately cannot be solved because much of the machinery today relies heavily on it. However, there are other forms of renewable energy such as solar panels. These panels are the most convenient use because they only require the rays of the sun. Solar expert Mr. Levins, a physicist, criticizes the United States by saying that “we do have a national energy policy it’s basically to keep wasting lots of energy import it at whatever price and by whatever means are necessary, keep stealing from our kids and keep screwing up the climate”. He also says that the amount of money used for energy research has decreased, which is a concern because then people will keep relying on oil. Mr. Levins’s ultimate goal is to help the U.S become free from oil by the 2040’s. His house uses solar panels, and according to the documentary it’s well insulated so it keeps warmth in as well as using batteries to store energy during the winter (Latham, Steven 2007). So, if the prices of solar panels would decrease then people would have more access to this renewable energy. Thus, if globalization were to be removed, which essentially is economic greed, and then the globe would not utilize oil.
People would then have a renewable energy source that is effective and efficient.
Oil has started to run low since the beginning of the 1990’s because of the high demand of it; The U.S being the number one in the consumption of oil. If other countries were to follow what the United States is doing the oil would increasingly drop and prices would rise. Take for instance big cities like Beijing. If cities as massive as these had access to personal cars the oil would dramatically decrease. Since already other countries are using this because of the unequal wealth distribution. This is why stepping away from this addicting resource is needed urgently because it would not only stop corruption but help the environment as well. There are alternatives such as hybrid cars or electric cars. Yet, people need to really be informed of which is really the best option for one’s pocket but for the environment. Society would essentially run on purely solar energy and would not depend on a resource that is quickly running out. By not having to rely on a source it would also lead to more technological advances that will not require running on oil.
