I had to first contact LVEJO to set up an appointment so I can debrief them on my Fire Project topic, this was one of my first accomplishments. One of my friends, who is also a Sojo Alumni, gave me their number to their office. I first met with Rafa, the youth coordinator and explained to him about my action plan working with them. He said that it was good that I came to seek them out because they need all the help they can get, especially from the youth.
I think what will be one of the challenges is informing people. I know this because when people are handing flyers they just throw it away. I do not want people acting like jerks when I’m passing the flyers out, but I just thought that I’d hang some up in stores and then let people ask for them if they are interested. I think this is the first time I go around the community and pass out flyers with an organization. I usually see people doing this and I never thought I’d be in their shoes. It was pretty cool though because I got to meet people who specialize in something I’m interested
in.
After the debriefing, Rafa said that I would be making flyers with information about a workshop and pass them out around the community. He said to pass them out in key areas like the school Gary and around bus stops. I agreed he showed me the flyers I would pass around. They had a lot of information and were attractive so people would gain interest. The next day I would come and begin making the flyers and that same day pass them out. I’m nervous but I think I can do it.

When I came back the next day to their office Rafa said that I would make 80 flyers and I would keep 20 to pass out at school and around the community. He taught me how to work the copy machine and I began to do my work. Their office is pretty nice and colorful. They have Aztec symbols around the top of the office. It’s unlike any other office I’ve seen. Rafa gave me a sandwich with coke and chips. He introduced me to the coordinator, she was a lady but I forgot her name. She was nice and asked me if people had complaints about the bus routes on 31st. I said yes and explained how one of my teachers was almost late because the bus took him someplace else instead of down 31st. After I was done making the copies he said I could go and hand out the flyers.
I went to 31st and went walking towards the Piotrowski. As I said before I did not want to hand out flyers because I knew people would only throw the paper and so I pasted them on poles and in stores. In Gary a lady asked me what the flyer was for. I was excited because she actually was interested. I explained how people had trouble getting around to locations on 31st because they had to rake different routes. I also explained how LVEJO was organizing workshops for deciding what the community wanted on 34thand Pulaski. The lady said thank you and that she would see if she would go. I was happy because I actually got to explain the flyers. After that I posted the flyers in the park and the bus stop on 31st.
It was windy that day and I got to have my brother come along so he could take pictures and help me. It was also hot so by the time I was done I was exhausted, but I managed to post all the flyers I was handed and even saved some for school. I placed some at school and got Ms. Farr to sign them. I felt pretty good about what I did and I accomplished what I wanted to do. It was not so bad and I enjoyed working with LVEJO. It was a good experience for me, it really was.
