The oil dependency issue will be viewed mainly through the lens of economics. Society has become very reliant on the product of oil in many aspects but primarily through automobiles. People constantly use oil for fuel for their methods of transportation, whether it is an actual car or a motorized bike. Yet, Oil companies take advantage of this because they try to detain better alternatives by shutting them down. Prior to this Oil companies had shut down trolleys and trains in the state of Californiaso as people could depend more on busses. They themselves provided busses and the oil to have them up and running. The oil companies wanted to keep making a profit from people having to use the busses rather than have trains. Since trains have their own track and waste far less fuel than busses. People would then have to spend buss fair back and forth from work and numerous people began to use busses as transportation. This then increased their prices and the demand of oil.
An example of the manipulation of the oil companies is with astrophysicist Dr. Willie Soon. He is known for stating that “global warming and the melting of the arctic sea ice are caused by solar variation rather than human-caused CO2 emissions” (guardian.co.uk). He feels strongly about this because he is a man of science and therefore is aware of what he is stating, yet he forgets to mention that oil companies have been funding him with great amounts of money and grants. According to guardian.co.uk, “documents provided by theGreenpeace… show that The Charles G Koch Foundation, a leading provider of funds for climate skeptic groups, gave Soon two grants totaling $175,000 in 2005/6 and again in 2010” (guardian.co.uk). On top of that he received “multiple grants from the American Petroleum Institute totaling $274,000”(guardian.co.uk) amongst other grants. As one can see people are always after the money being produced by a rare natural resource. They just want to get a massive amount of a profit and become ambiguous and greedy individuals. People
then are after gaining money above their own beliefs. Ultimately, one will always place value over scarce resources. Moreover, they will create a huge collapse with the function of numerous machinery that require oil.
In addition, during the time period of the 1990, where the invasion of the Iraqi’s started the prices of gasoline were dramatic. “The average vehicle cost about $57,000 per year, compared to $50 a month to use PACE bus system on a monthly pass basis” (Shannon, Thomas, 2002). This meant that
people who were using automobiles were paying high currency just for a commodity. Moreover, “oil imports contributed to our massive trade deficit in the 1980’s. Increasing the dependence on foreign oil has left the United States more vulnerable economically to disruption in foreign
production” (Shannon,Thomas, 2002). In other words, not only were people paying high prices for the car, but for the gas as well. The United Stateshas to understand that if this issue does
not detain itself it will lead to a dramatic shift in the society. People will no longer have access to the needed shipments, like food or water, since boats use oil as gas for transportation. That will leave many without food. A more severe outcome would be that people will no longer have oil, since it’s a
non-renewable energy source. Society will no longer have access to basic necessities because of the lack oil, hence the lack of transportation services.
Oil has started to run low since the beginning of the 1990’s because of the high demand of it; The U.S being the number one in the consumption of oil. If other countries were to follow what the United States is doing the oil would increasingly drop and prices would rise. Take for instance big cities like Beijing. If cities as massive as these had access to personal cars the oil would dramatically
decrease. Since already other countries are using this because of the unequal wealth distribution. This is why stepping away from this addicting resource is needed urgently because it would not only stop corruption but help the environment as well. There are alternatives such as hybrid cars or electric cars. Yet, people need to really be informed of which is really the best option for one’s pocket but for the environment.
